During the last meetings before the summer break, the MEPs exchanged views on crucial topics for the nursing profession. Among others, the European Parliament Committees discussed key issues related to the employment and social policy research agenda and the new funding programme European Social Fund Plus (ESF+). The ENRF Secretary General, Paul De Raeve, carefully follows the debate on these topics, and stresses that nurses are central to advance health research agenda, therefore the EU Institutions should concretely support and invest in health and nursing research.
Interesting are the ongoing political discussions on the Health budget proposal for the 9th Framework Programme, “Horizon Europe”. We positively noted the proposed increase of the overall draft budget to €94.1 billion, of which €7.7 billion is proposed to fund the “Health” cluster under Pillar II of the Programme. The European Commission, European Parliament and the Council of the EU will need to set the priorities within this “Health” cluster. Therefore, it is time for the health research community to stand together and make it known that we are dedicated to improving the lives of European citizens and that it is in the best interest for our population that their health and social care ecosystems to deliver better outcomes are prioritised.
